The Margaret Pratt Foundation

History of the MPF PDF Print
In 1994 Margaret Pratt’s life was challenged by the fatal condition primary pulmonary hypertension (abnormally high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs).

Her life was saved through a double lung transplant, a feat only made possible through the donation of organs and the expertise of the Lung Transplant Service team at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne.

Inspired by a second chance at life and the lifesaving research and technology available at The Alfred hospital, in 2000 Margaret launched The Margaret Pratt Foundation, Heart Lung Transplant Trust in order to help fund lung transplant research.

In 2001, Margaret became seriously ill with chronic lung rejection and in January 2002 she became the first adult in Australia to successfully receive a second double lung transplant.

In January 2006 Margaret once again became seriously ill with chronic lung rejection and within months her lungs failed to the point where she was near death, in a wheelchair and on oxygen 24 hours a day. Margaret’s only hope of survival was a 3rd lung transplant and in August she became the only person in Australia to undergo 3 double lung transplants.
