At age 33, Margaret Pratt was given less than two years to live, diagnosed with a fatal lung condition. Placed on the transplant waiting list, it was an agonising seven months before suitable donor organs were available.
It was a double lung transplant that changed her life forever.
Margaret's story of survival reveals that we all have the power within us to overcome obstacles and achieve higher goals. It just takes determination and perseverance.
Margaret didn't realize just how much determination and perseverance she would need. In 2001, she faced another battle for life to overcome transplant rejection. It was a further challenge to both her physical and psychological resolve, to undergo a second lung transplant.
Margaret Pratt is the first successful adult in Australia to have undergone two double lung transplants.
In January 2006 Margaret once again became seriously ill with chronic lung rejection and within months her lungs failed to the point where she was near death, in a wheelchair and on oxygen 24 hours a day. Margaret’s only hope of survival was a 3rd lung transplant and in August she became the only person in Australia to undergo 3 double lung transplants.
Her story and presentation communicates the remarkable courage, determination and inspiration that are a model for anyone with an obstacle to overcome or a challenge to rise up and meet.
Her message is clear: you can take control of your life, find strength to endure and keep moving forward, even when things seem overwhelming.
Today, Margaret Pratt guides and inspires the growth and success of the Margaret Pratt Foundation - Heart and Lung Transplant Trust. She and a dedicated band of volunteers work tirelessly to raise money for research into both lung and heart transplants.
